Updating WordPress safely

Keeping WordPress updated is critical for security. Here's how to do it safely.

Before updating

  1. Back up your site (use a plugin like UpdraftPlus, or download via SFTP)
  2. Check that your theme and plugins are compatible with the new version
  3. If possible, test the update on a staging site first

How to update

  1. Log into wp-admin
  2. Go to Dashboard → Updates
  3. Click Update Now for WordPress core
  4. Update plugins and themes one at a time

If something breaks

If your site shows errors after an update, try deactivating the most recently updated plugin via SFTP by renaming its folder in /wp-content/plugins/. If you're stuck, open a support ticket and we'll help.
